We have a challenge for you!
September is Deaf Awareness month and CLASS believes that one of the best ways to promote Deaf Awareness is to involve hearing people in activities that help them relate to the difficulties deaf people face in real life and the experiences they go through.
It is very difficult for people who are born hearing and develop spoken language in the usual way to understand or imagine what it can be like to be born deaf. However, it is possible up to a point to simulate deafness, by using ear-plugs, and have some experience of what it is like not to be able to hear, even if only for a short time.
Adults, we challenge you to wear earplugs for a day and go about your day as you typically would whether that is at work, home or leisure time.
Why a day?
Children in this province and all over Canada are not receiving equitable education due to being Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH)...many wait days to receive instruction of only 30 minutes...just imagine how much learning and information is lost in one day.
Think you can do it?
Just a few safety tips before starting this challenge:
1. make sure you have a note pad and pen or phone should you need it.
2. Be sure to scan your surroundings always.
3. You may not want to use your voice because people will think you can hear.
I just finished this challenge in honour of my son Carter and the millions of other DHH people living in our country. I learned much more than I had expected which gave me a deeper level of understanding.
What will you learn? Who will you do it for?
The Ear Plug Challenge must include:
1. Posting a video (answering #2, #3 & #4) or photo showing you wearing the ear plugs
2. Tell who challenged you
3. Tell us what was hard about reduced hearing and if you were able to make it all day
4. Call out at least one other person to do the challenge
Share your experience with us and upload your videos or photos and tag NLCLASS using #classearplugchallenge
And children, you can take part in this challenge as well. Check with your school to learn more or have a parent contact us at [email protected]
Lastly, if you feel you can not take part in this challenge then please consider making a contribution to the Children’s Language Acquisition Support System. All money raised goes towards helping families with children who are DHH or non speaking.
Thank you.
